Édition de tête THE PLAY OF PERICLÈS

The Play of Pericles Prince of Tyre.

HÉLÈNE FRANCOEUR- BOOKBINDING OFF THE BEATEN PATH

By Jocelyne Aird-Bélanger

Full paste binding on Aux sources claires, by Jacqueline Francoeur, Montréal 1935
The paste paper by Hélène Francoeur, and the repeated word across the spine,
refer to the title  «souces» meaning «spring».
One day, in the past, Hélène Francoeur brought love letters to a bookbinder who made a book out of them. It was love at first sight for a craft that can transform scattered sheets of paper into a magnificent ensemble, well adapted to caresses and years! This happened more than twenty years ago in Chicoutimi. A few years later Hélène returned to Quebec City, her home town, where she soon installed a professional bookbinding studio.

At that time, her knowledge was elementary. Nevertheless, she began a search for a solid and diversified training like the one offered by CBBAG. So began a permanent training that still continues after more than 30 courses with teachers from this country, the United States or France. Meanwhile, her studio gained recognition: orders began orders began coming in, courses were organized in her studio and her personal work started obtaining prizes.

During a week-long course at Betsy Palmer Eldrige’s studio in 1995-96, she met the formidable Crispin Elsted, who manages Barbarian Press with his wife Jan, in Mission, British Columbia. This mythic studio, creator of rare and sophisticated books welcomed the young bookbinder from Quebec City for training in typography in 1998.

Ten years later, another fascinating adventure in the limitless country of bookbinding began for Hélène. At the invitation of Crispin, who trusted her completely, she agreed to bind the deluxe edition of The Play of Pericles Prince of Tyre. This contract involved the completion of 16 boxes containing a full binding, a quarter binding and a portfolio with wood block engravings. The project took over nine months to complete and required constant, steady and complex exchanges between Quebec City and the Pacific coast.

The Play of Pericles Prince of Tyre is one of William Shakespeare's rarely performed plays, full of sound and fury. In his design, Elsted was able to bring several distinct and varying sources of knowledge — acting and directing, textual studies, the writing and study of poetry, and typography — interpreting the complexity of the play’s text. The final work included interpolations from George Wilkins’ Painful Adventures in a text newly edited for the press by Crispin Elsted with many wood engravings by Simon Brett.

The deluxe edition consists of 12 copies for sale with four copies hors commerce. It is bound by Hélène Francoeur in a déstructuration binding – a term used to describe a French binding style in which pieces or strips of leather are cut and pasted down onto a backing to create images, patterns, or a nuanced surface -- of alum-tawed goat and purple morocco, with stamping in gold; the supplementary volume is bound in quarter alum-tawed goat déstructuration with a cover paper printed with calligraphy by Andrea Taylor. It is accompanied by a portfolio of a selection of signed and numbered proofs of wood block engravings by Simon Brett. The paste-paper endsheets are by Hélène Francoeur. The whole ensemble is contained in a clamshell box of purple silk with a vellum label stamped in gold. Each copy sells for $3,600 and the edition is already out of print.

To reach such a level of refinement and quality, the bookbinder who plays here a role of high-level performer, had to show patience, imagination and know-how. Crispin had carefully chosen the materials which seemed to answer his overall design. In spite of his attention to detail, the alum-tawed goat (off-white) arrived at the studio with many flaws. Aided by her experience, plus a natural capacity to leave the beaten path and try out different ways, Hélène had the idea to cut these skins in strips to realize a finely-textured binding. The purple leather was not exactly the color that was planned. She experimented endlessly with paste paper until she obtained the perfect hue before tracing the arcs that were part of the original plan. She had to manually colour 96 large sheets of the exact same colour, according to a very precise recipe and decorate all of them alike. In such a complex situation, one has to confirm with the customer that the best versions have been attained! The post office, the telephone, e-mails, everything was used to ensure everyone was on the same wavelength before starting such an important production. The final result, far from suffering from all these adjustments, went beyond the expectations of everyone involved in this major project.

Meanwhile, while the glue dries, one has to continue earning a living! Hélène Francoeur is an artist motivated by the ongoing discoveries that bookbinding offers, either in traditional or contemporary techniques, or by meeting people who come to her ceaselessly with new challenges. Stimulated by the creation of new works or by her teaching, she experiments constantly and keeps an eye on the vast world she first discovered the day she began studying bookbinding, her lifetime work today.

Hélène Francoeur chooses to work alone most of the time. It is difficult to find competent apprentices whose work one has to guarantee without being able to offer them a job on a regular basis. A tireless worker, Hélène makes an average of a hundred books a year. 2011 was an exceptional year: including the Pericles project, she realized approximately 175 fine bindings, repairs and restorations, in cloth or leather, according to customer demands. Added to this work are her personal realizations for competitions or special exhibitions. Teaching brings her a lot of satisfaction as she enjoys passing on her knowledge and helping her students resolve the problems they encounter.

The binding milieu has evolved a lot in Quebec City and now offers many more resources than when she first began. Some bookbinders collaborate for special projects or meet for collective purchases or group exhibitions. Bookbinders' professional associations already existed in this province when she opened her studio. As soon as they took root in her city, she became involved with them and is, at present, on the board of directors of ARA-CANADA. Constantly amazed by the discoveries and richness of the bookbinding world, Hélène Francoeur is as enthusiastic as she was at her beginnings and keeps broadening her knowledge by practising her craft as a renewed creative adventure.

Second International Bookbinding Competition
Organized by Designer Bookbinders
For more information, Helene Francoeur
June, 2013 in Oxford, England.

It is with great pleasure that Designer Bookbinders announce its 2nd International Bookbinding Competition in association with Mark Getty and the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford. There will be no ‘set book’. Instead the competition will have the theme of Shakespeare. The binder may choose any edition of Shakespeare’s work in any language. They can choose his dramas, his poetic works, a single play or a collected volume, or a text relating to his life and work.

It is hoped that in freeing the binders from the constraints of a ‘set book’, entrants will be stimulated by the opportunity to source and work with a text of their choice and feel encouraged to use of a wide range of structures, materials and design techniques. It is worth noting that many collectors place great importance on the quality of the text as well as the style of the binding. It is expected that there will be greater potential for binders to sell their work subsequently as there will not be multiple bindings of the same text on offer.
